CALABAR -Two unidentified but suspected armed robbers were on Sunday morning beaten to death by residents of Ekpo Abasi, near Yellow Duke, in Calabar South Local Government Area of Cross River State
The Cross River State Police Command while confirming the mob action against the suspects, said its operatives responded to the scene, documented the situation and commenced preliminary investigations to determine the circumstances surrounding the deaths and establish the identities of the victims.
Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Sunday Eitokpah Akata, said preliminary findings indicated that the two men had been apprehended and attacked by residents before the arrival of the police.
The Command disclosed that the bodies had been evacuated from the scene with the assistance of relevant local government authorities for proper preservation.
The Command also condemned the resort to jungle justice, warning residents against taking the law into their own hands.
It urges members of the public to always hand suspected offenders over to the police or other lawful authorities for investigation and prosecution.
According to the Police “No individual has the right to take the law into their own hands.”
The Command assured residents that additional information would be released as the investigation progresses.
