UYO-The Akwa Ibom State government, through the Ministry of Education, has constituted a seven-member Electoral Committee (ELECO) to conduct elections into the executive offices of the National Association of Akwa Ibom State Students (NAAKISS) Worldwide.
The constitution of the committee follows the expiration of the tenure of the association’s executives and the failure of the interim National Government as well as the Parliament of NAAKISS Worldwide to conduct fresh elections.
In a release dated August 18, 2026, and signed by the Director of the State Education Quality Assurance Service, Mr Abasiama Inyang, for the Commissioner for Education, Professor Ubong Umoh ,the Ministry said the action was taken in accordance with the NAAKISS Worldwide Constitution 1996, as amended in 2022.
The seven-member committee is chaired by Uko-Obong Eliok Friday of the University of Uyo Chapter, while Abasireke Sunday Ekanem of the Abia State University Chapter, Miriam Imoh Solomon of the University of Maiduguri Chapter, Esuene John Akpan of the University of Port Harcourt Chapter, Kingsley Friday James of the Akwa Ibom State University Chapter and Abigail Bassey Nyah of Anchor University Lagos Chapter serve as members.
Esse Asukwo Umoh of the Akwa Ibom State Polytechnic Chapter is to serve as secretary of the committee.
The Ministry of Education said the establishment of the ELECO was necessitated by the need to restore an elected and constitutionally recognised leadership structure to NAAKISS Worldwide following the expiration of the tenure of the previous executives.
Consequently, the state government has dissolved all extant executive, parliamentary and judicial office holders of NAAKISS Worldwide, whether elected, interim or appointed.
The affected officials have also been directed to hand over all property possessions and official documents belonging to NAAKISS Worldwide in their custody to the Desk Officer, Student Affairs, Mrs Kokomma Bassey Akpan, at the Ministry of Education, Block 10, Room 414, Idongesit Nkanga Secretariat, Uyo.
The Ministry said the directive was intended to facilitate a smooth transition and provide the Electoral Committee with a clear institutional framework to commence its assignment without administrative encumbrances.
While congratulating the newly constituted members of the ELECO, the commissioner for Education charged them to discharge their responsibilities within the stipulated timeframe and with manifest integrity.
The development is expected to pave the way for the conduct of fresh elections and the emergence of a new leadership for NAAKISS Worldwide, which represents Akwa Ibom students across tertiary institutions within and outside the state.
The constitution of the Electoral Committee also underscores the state government’s interest in ensuring that student organisations operate within the framework of their governing statutes, with credible leadership emerging through due process.
The seven-member ELECO is therefore expected to commence the processes leading to the election of new national officers of NAAKISS Worldwide, in line with the provisions of the association’s amended constitution.
