UYO- The Akwa Ibom government has urged the Port Harcourt Electricity Distribution (PHED) PLC, to comply with the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) by transferring and incorporating Akwa Ibom DISCO.
It would be recalled that on 18th August 2026, NERC issued Order No. NERC/2026/087, transferring regulator oversight of the intrastate electricity market to the Akwa Ibom State Electricity Regulatory Commission(AKSERC), under section 230 of the Electricity Act, 2023.
Governor Umo Eno made request while receiving the board and management of PHED on a courtesy visit to him in Government House, Uyo, Friday .
He called for closer collaboration between the state government and the Port Harcourt Electricity Distribution Plc(PHED) , to deliver steady and reliable electricity to Akwa Ibom residents.
The governor noted that reliable electricity is central to the success of the ARISE Agenda of his administration.
He said the state’s gas resources, generation capacity, and industrial potentials attract investments and drives growth, and all depend on reliable power to function.
Eno further said electricity supply goes hand in hand with the state electricity policy, and therefore, tasked PHED to review its strategy in the State in line with the State electricity policy.
He assured the electricity body that the government was prepared to work with it, stressing that the State had set up a regulatory commission to provide firm, transparent and predictable regulations, and set expectations for investment, while enabling credible operators in a thriving state electricity market.
Earlier, the Board Chairman of PHED PLC, Mr Olice Kemenanabo, an engineer ,commended Governor Eno for his visionary and impactful leadership, and his commitment to ensure improved electricity and a more significant economic growth in the state.
He said the Board was in the State for their meeting, which he said was the first outside the company’s corporate headquarters in port Harcourt, and decided to pay homage to the Governor.
Kemenanabo pledged the company’s commitment to collaborate with the State government towards improving electricity service delivery and achieving reliable and uninterrupted power supply across the state.
With the governor to receive the visitors were the Secretary to the State Government, Prince Enobong Uwah; the Executive Assistant and Chief Delivery Advisor to the Governor, Mr. Aniefiok Johnson; members of the State Executive Council; chairman and Chief Executive Officer, Akwa Ibom State Electricity Regulatory Commission (AKSERC), Ms. Arit Uya, and other government functionaries.
