The chairman of Itu Local Government Area,on Saturday personally took part in the month of July state-wide sanitation exercise by monitoring compliance and demonstrating his administration’s commitment to a cleaner, healthier and flood-free environment in the locality.
This is in compliance with the directive of the Governor of Akwa Ibom, Pastor Umo Eno for all residents to actively participate in the monthly environmental sanitation exercise,
The chairman inspected several locations within the area, where residents were actively engaged in clearing refuse, sweeping their surroundings and desilting drainage channels in line with the monthly sanitation exercise.
In the course of the monitoring exercise, the council boss met with the Akwa Ibom State Environmental Protection and Waste Management Agency (AKSEPWMA) monitoring team, led by its Board Chairman, Obong Prince Akpan Ikim, as they carried out the agency’s statewide compliance exercise within the local government area.
The two leaders jointly monitored compliance at Itam Market, where traders and residents were observed cleaning the market environment.
Athough ,a few sanitation offenders were apprehended by the AKSEPWMA enforcement team and taken before the Environmental Sanitation Court for appropriate action.
At the Council Secretariat, Mbak Atai, the chairman personally participated in clearing overgrown vegetation alongside council officials and residents, reinforcing his belief that leadership should be demonstrated through action.
Speaking with journalists after the exercise, Nkutt said his participation aligned Governor Umo Eno’s directive for residents to actively engage in environmental sanitation, particularly through the clearing and desilting of drainage channels to mitigate flooding.
He added that extensive sensitisation campaigns were carried out across Itu on Friday ahead of the exercise to encourage maximum public participation.
The chairman urged residents of Itu and Akwa Ibom to consistently support the monthly environmental sanitation programme, stressing that maintaining a clean environment is a shared civic responsibility.
He was satisfied with the level of compliance recorded across the local government, noting that residents turned out in large numbers to clean their communities, a development he described as encouraging and a positive step towards sustaining a cleaner and healthier in Itu.
